Case Study: Dartford Tunnel Confined Space Rescue

INFRATEC Training is currently providing specialist confined space rescue cover at the Dartford Tunnel to support McCann during critical underground infrastructure works. This ongoing project demonstrates our ability to deploy professional rescue teams into one of the UK's busiest and most challenging live transport environments.

The Client Requirement

McCann required a reliable confined space rescue provider capable of supporting planned works within below-surface service chambers and tunnel infrastructure.

The project required:

  • Immediate emergency response capability

  • Night shift operational cover

  • Rescue standby during confined space entries

  • Integration with permits and contractor systems

  • Dynamic risk management in a tunnel environment

The Challenges we overcame

Working within the Dartford Crossing environment created several operational demands:

Nigh Working & Fatigue Control

Shifts operated during night hours, requiring robust welfare arrangements and team management.

Restricted Access Chambers

Tight Access points required specialist rescue planning and retrieval systems.

Communication Limitations

Tunnel environments can affect radio performance, so contingency communication methods were implemented.

Rapid Response Readiness

The rescue team had to remain fully prepared to respond instantly while allowing contractor works to continue efficiently.

INFRATEC Solution

We mobilised a supervisor-led confined space rescue team equipped with:

  • Tripod rescue systems

  • Retrieval and lowering equipment

  • Gas detection monitors

  • Rescue stretchers and casualty harnesses

  • Oxygen therapy and trauma equipment

  • Defibrillator

  • Breathing apparatus contingency equipment

  • Dedicated communications systems

Each shift included:

  • Pre-start briefings

  • Equipment checks

  • Permit integration

  • Rescue readiness confirmation

  • Dynamic risk assessment reviews

Results So Far

Our ongoing delivery has helped provide:

  • Safe support for confined space operations

  • Strong contractor confidence

  • Reliable attendance and continuity

  • Flexible response to changing site needs

  • Professional rescue capability in a critical infrastructure setting
